Do our societies need Holocaust studies?
International Conference in Amsterdam: ‘Holocaust and its Social Settings – Challenges and Trends’
At a time of informed warnings of a higher level of antisemitism in word and deed, and steps by European governments to better monitor and counter it, enhanced discussion of the role and impact of Holocaust research on societies must be on the agenda as well. The European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) has facilitated new trans-national research into the Holocaust since 2010, and has played a significant role in exploring the impacts of Holocaust studies on contemporary European societies. The EHRI conference “Holocaust and its Social Settings: Challenges and Trends” will feature renowned Holocaust researchers and policymakers from across Europe, Israel and the United States, including historians Wendy Lower and Dieter Pohl and the European Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism, Katharina von Schnurbein. The conference will explore the changing nexus between access to Holocaust archives, academic research into the Holocaust and the significance of Holocaust memory for informing societal discussions on topics such as antisemitism, xenophobia and discrimination.
