Sono state numerose le conferenze, le mostre e le manifestazioni che si sono svolte in tutta Europa in occasione del Centenario della Grande Guerra. Gli ebrei – come collettività e come singoli – hanno partecipato al conflitto al pari delle altre popolazioni: combattenti di leva e volontari, soldati semplici, sottufficiali e ufficiali hanno combattuto su vari fronti. Organizzazioni ebraiche si sono mobilitate ed ebrei singoli hanno collaborato con associazioni non ebraiche per supportare lo sforzo bellico o per dare un contributo all’assistenza materiale e spirituale. Le comunità che allora si chiamavano israelitiche hanno patito, al pari delle altre, danni e distruzioni. Uomini di cultura e politici hanno partecipato al dibattito sulla partecipazione alla guerra con articoli dai toni interventisti o neutralisti.
La Fondazione CDEC ha ritenuto necessario indagare, attraverso lo studio di una documentazione ricca e sorprendente come quella fotografica, le forme di questa partecipazione, proponendo un itinerario lontano dalla retorica e attento a cogliere i diversi aspetti religiosi, sociali, culturali e politici che hanno caratterizzato l’esperienza ebraica italiana in quegli anni. Il risultato del lavoro è stato una mostra itinerante, la cui struttura è stata pensata per permettere a ogni tappa un arricchimento con nuovi documenti fotografici e ulteriori approfondimenti dedicati alle diverse esperienze locali.
Nel settembre del 2018, con la pubblicazione di questo catalogo, è stata data una veste editoriale all’esperienza espositiva. Lo stimolo è arrivato anche dalle migliaia di visitatori che hanno apprezzato i contenuti di questo progetto, con il quale abbiamo voluto innanzitutto ragionare su un valore sommo e mai definitivamente acquisito come la “cittadinanza”. Un principio che ha caratterizzato la vita degli ebrei nei primi decenni del Regno d’Italia, spingendo tanti ad abbracciare con convinzione gli ideali del Risorgimento fino a interpretare la guerra del 1915-18 come il suo necessario coronamento. Un principio tradito dopo soli vent’anni, quando nel 1938 le leggi razziste volute dal regime fascista andarono a colpire l’esperienza dell’emancipazione ebraica in Italia.
Guardare a quegli avvenimenti attraverso il filtro delle centinaia di documenti fotografici conservati nell’archivio storico della Fondazione CDEC, grazie anche al contributo di numerosi donatori che hanno voluto partecipare alla realizzazione di questa mostra, consente di riflettere sul significato profondo che si vuole attribuire all’idea di cittadinanza, educando le giovani generazioni a considerarlo un diritto imprescindibile.

A Documentary Journey through the Years of the Great War
On the occasion of the centennial of the Great War, a series of special conferences, exhibitions and events took place throughout Europe. Like other ethnic and national groups, the Jews, too – as a community as well as individuals – took an intensive part in the War as regular draftees and volunteer fighters, soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officials; they fought on different fronts. Jewish organizations joined in, and Jews as individuals collaborated with non-Jewish associations to support the war effort directly or to be part of the effort to provide spiritual and material assistance. Like other groups, Jewish Communities – referred to as Israelite Communities during this period – went through loss and destruction during the war. Savants as well as politicians were involved in the debate on the merits of Italy’s involvement in the war; publications appeared, spanning the gamut of military possibility, some of them calling for intervention while others summoned Italy to remain neutral.
The CDEC Foundation wanted to probe, through the study of a rich and revelatory collection of documents, primarily photographs, the forms that Italy’s part in the war assumed at different stages. To avoid being longwinded or bombastic, it aimed to take in the diverse religious, social, cultural, and political aspects of the times which shaped the Jewish experience of the war years. The result was an itinerant exhibition conceived in such a way as to be able to grow and be enriched, in each different city where it is hosted, by the addition of new documents and detailed studies focusing on the local experience of the war as it proceeded.
In September 2018 this catalogue was published to give visitors an integrated experience of the exhibition. A further stimulus for publication came from the appreciation, voiced by thousands of visitors, for a core aim of the present project, which targets reflecting upon the monumental, never definitively achieved value of “citizenship.” Citizenship was the guiding principle structuring the life of Italian Jews during the first decades of the Kingdom of Italy, leading many of them to adopt the ideals of the Risorgimento to the point of understanding the war of 1915-18 as the Risorgimento’s natural and necessary completion. The same foundational principle of citizenship was betrayed a bare twenty years later, when the racist laws enacted by the Fascist regime in 1938 did away with the emancipation of Italy’s Jews. The hundreds of photographs preserved by CDEC Foundation Photography Archives, along with others generously loaned by countless private individuals who helped enable the project of this exhibition to come true, afford a unique lens through which the fundamental meaning we associate with “citizenship” may be scrutinized in a new way. The CDEC Foundation hopes and trusts that the experience of innovative historical interpretation to which this gives rise will also educate us and the younger generation of today in honoring our approach to citizenship as an essential value.
